Jesus on the Streets (on a hot, sad day...yet another death) - July 15, 2023
It was a hot sad day in Brockton today as we served over 95 meals of Sloppy Joes to our friends on the street. (They were so excited to get this meal.) It was really hot and some on our team (including me) felt a bit woozy. (Learn from me, watch your electrolytes people!) It was also a sad day as we mourned the loss of our friend Matty on Thursday, and then we learned our friend Steve (on Green St) passed away yesterday in his sleep. (We’ll post on that separately.) That shook all of us because today we stopped especially to see him. I grow tired of attending funerals, just sayin’. (Sorry for complaining.)
There were many prayer requests from friends new and old/long-term 😉.
- Peter (#1) was really excited to receive the cane we promised him. He is praying for a home (and out of shelter).
- Adilson is praying that he gets housing soon.
- Peter (#2) explained to me that faith without works is dead. (From the Bible’s Book of James, preach it brother!)
- Matt has been in prison for 6 years and is hoping to restart his life. He wants out of Brockton (too many temptations) and is praying to get to Hyannis where there is summer work and family to help him stay out of trouble. His friend Ron is sticking with him and they’re both trying to keep clean.
- Julie is a nurse and has a herniated disc in her neck and she’s praying for insight regarding the best medical options.
- Barbara (in the powered wheelchair) came looking for us to have prayer. She can’t walk but her spirit soars! She’s praying for her sister Linda who is losing feeling in her legs.
- Bobby and Andrea seem to be staying with friends and are not living under the bridge right now.
- Rachel is praying for housing and her daughter Lisa is having surgery for endometriosis.
- Sandy needs prayer for kidney issues.
- Susan is being evicted in 2 weeks and needs a safe place to live.
- Robert’s friend Anthony is sober, and living with his wife and daughter again. Yay!
- Cassie needs prayer of comfort. She’s the one who found Matty dead in the park with a note from a “friend” left on him. (We don’t know the whole story but who does that?) Cassie is traumatized.
- Sammy is celebrating 56 days sober. Woohoo! He needs prayers to stay sober so he can get housing and then back surgery.
- Steve’s family, Bobby D and Aunt Peg, need prayers. They don’t have much money and are wrestling with funeral arrangements and other issues.
It was a rough day, with the heat and emotions, so instead of Dunkin for wrap up we went for ice cream. Ice cream always helps. Thank you all for making our (sometimes happy and sometimes sad) ministry very meaningful to those we serve.
